Update on Electrical Standards

for Motorhomes and Caravans in New Zealand

We’d like to clarify the current electrical standards for motorhomes and caravans in New Zealand.

The applicable standard in our country is the AS-NZS 3000:2018.

It’s important to note that the more recent AS-NZS 3000:2023 Parts 1 & 2 is not yet ratified in New Zealand and, therefore, doesn’t apply to our operations.

While the AS-NZS 3000:2023 standard is in use in Australia, its regulations, particularly those concerning the storage and location of lead and lithium batteries, are NOT the industry standard New Zealand, nor is it likely to be. This can be confusing if you’re not aware of this.

So while we may see Australian caravans coming into NZ with differences (such as batteries mounted in stainless steel boxes underneath the vehicle as required by their regulations), the legal requirements in New Zealand are NOT the same as Australia, nor are they likely to become so.

Motorhome Solar is dedicated to providing high-quality products and services while following New Zealand’s regulations. We will keep you informed about any changes to electrical standards if they become relevant in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
